Charter Construction Inc. of Seattle was named the grand award winner
for construction excellence by the Associated General Contractors of
Washington last night.
Eighteen commercial construction projects, in categories based
on type of construction and dollar volume, were honored. Judging
criteria included the originality of construction methods, innovation
to overcome isolated site conditions, safety and loss control, and
environmental protection. This year 42 projects were entered in the
competition.
Wade Perrow Construction Inc. of Gig Harbor and Eberharter
Construction Inc. of Seattle each won three category awards. Lease
Crutcher Lewis of Seattle and SDL Corp. of Bellevue won two awards each.
Charter won the grand award for the Bloedel Reserve Education Center, located in a horticultural reserve on Bainbridge Island.
Because of possible damage to the plants and trees near the
center, Charter constructed the building without cranes, forklifts and
other construction machinery. All materials were wheeled to the site
manually.
Charter hoisted architectural grade timbers by hand or with
A-frames and fit all components to 1/16-inch tolerances. The contractor
developed mortising and joining techniques and successfully met the
owner's demand for perfect detailing, including over 120 specific
finish carpentry details.
The project was entered in the wood frame construction, under $1 million category. James Cutler Architects is the architect.
Wade Perrow Construction's three awards were for the Madigan
Army Medical Center renovation to Fort Lewis, the Bremerton Department
of Social and Health Services Building renovation and the Masca Bulk
Chemical distribution building in Puyallup.
At Madigan the contractor spent two months prior to
construction developing an work-order system which allowed completion
of the center's 1,200 rooms ahead of schedule. The project won the
remodel/renovation category for projects over $2 million. Architect was
John Graham Associates and Sherlock, Smith and Adams, Inc.
In Bremerton, the company turned an old garage into a
30,000-square-foot office building for the Bremerton DSHS. Perrow
replaced the roof diaphragm, bringing it up to seismic code, and
successfully handled contaminated soils. It was entered in the
remodel/renovation under $2 million category. The architect was
M.S.G.S. Architects.
Skillful value engineering by Perrow kept the Masca project's
cost within budget. Pre-planning and an extensive critical path method
schedule, the contractor met the 90-day completion goal. The Design
professional for the precast masonry project valued at under $1 million
was Lockwood Greene.
Eberharter Construction also nabbed three awards, winning for
the Kent library, University of Washington's branch campus and the
Washington state Convention and Trade Center expansion.
Creativity helped Eberharter to overcome 24-foot deep
permafrost in diving the Kent Library's pilings 30-feet deep. The
contractor also turned a problem into a solution by mixing contaminated
soil found on the site with cement and water to make the building's
asphalt parking lot. All environmental authorities approved the
procedure. The Henry Klien Partnership, Architects was the design
professional on the wood frame building, valued between $1 million and
$6 million.
Despite the 90 year old building, its web of old pipes and
wiring, existing tenants and the prevalence of asbestos, Eberharter
completed the renovation of the building which became the new site of
the UW branch campus in only four months. Several fire and safety
systems installed by the contractor required no follow-up inspections
by local building officials. The project won in the tenant improvement
between $1 million and $6 million category. Design professional was
Roger Williams, Architects.
Eberharter remodeled 50,000-square feet of space and added a
new floor and a 30,000-square-foot structural steel addition to the
existing roof without disrupting the ongoing activity at the state
Convention and Trade Center in Seattle. The tenant improvement project,
valued at over $6 million was designed by TRA and HNTB.
