Project Overview
Mother Nature was no match for Charter Construction, whose crews
successfully repaired the historic, 33-unit Carroll Apartment complex
following the February, 2001 Nisqually Earthquake.
The quake had caused the northwest upper parapet corner of the brick
wall to shift two inches. Charter crews repaired the wall and also
installed strapping and anchor bolts to protect against future tremors.
Crews went to great lengths to restore the building to its original
form. Over the years, many of the buildings historical elements had
been covered over. The exterior brick was stripped and the entire
system tuckpointed to restore to a historic brick finish. Crews also
used old photos of the building to assist in creating a partial cornice
similar to the original.
Mid-project, the building’s owner opted for a complete renovation
of the interior. Crews transitioned into design-build mode, working
closely with the owner and architect ahead of the construction schedule
to ensure the project was completed within budget and on time.
