Owner: Anna Chavelle
Architect: Olson Sundberg Kundig
Allen Architects
Completion: December 1998
Built on the shores of Portage Bay, this private
residence is a showcase for the owner’s collection of Native American art
from the Pacific Northwest. The formal design required precise
craftsmanship and museum-quality finishes to ensure that the interior
living spaces neither compete with nor detract from the artwork being
showcased.
The entryway of the home features a full size totem pole that is
built into the home and requires its own foundation. The main entry
foyer, living and dining areas are support-free space. The
chef’s kitchen features automated sunshades that are concealed
in the millwork.
This site offered the dual challenges of both an environmentally
sensitive shoreline location and close proximity to neighboring houseboats
that could be affected by construction. Prior to construction, the
Charter team conducted a presentation of the plans and construction
timelines.
Charter successfully completed the complex excavation, backfill, and
regrading of the site during one of Seattle’s rainiest winters
on record, with no damage to the critical environmental area.
