Architect: James Cutler Architects
Completion: September 1989
Awards: Seattle Historical Commission Citation,
1986
All eyes were on Charter when crews constructed a retail
space addition at Seattle’s historic and extremely popular
Pike Place Market.
Because the Pike Place Market is a historic landmark, great care
was taken to ensure that the architectural form and detailing of
the addition matched those of the market itself. The addition was
built upon the existing bridge deck that spans Western Avenue. Neither
traffic on nearby Western Avenue nor retail activity at the market
were to be disturbed during construction.
Work included significant cast-in-place concrete and structural
steel seismic improvement to the bridge deck, as well as the addition
itself.
