Owner: Kinokuniya Bookstores of America
Architect: KNTA
Architects London & Singapore
Completion: November 2000
With the architects and the owner located thousands of miles from
their project, Charter had to rely on inventive technology and close
communication to complete this tenant improvement job.
The Kinokuniya Bookstore is located in Seattle’s Asian shopping
center, Uwajimaya Village, and is the largest Asian bookstore in
the United States. With the owner in Japan and the architects in
Singapore and London, Charter crews relied heavily on email and facsimile
to communicate. Plans and new drawings were sent via the Internet
in a Vector Works program and printed on Charter’s plotter.
Despite the daunting logistics and an architecture firm that had
never before worked on a job in the U.S., Charter completed the project
on time for a pre-set opening date of November 18, 2000.
