Owner: Western Athletic Clubs
Architect: KDW Architects
Completion: September 1997
Charter crews worked 24 hours a day to complete this 10-day, fast-track
remodel of the Seattle Athletic Club’s locker room and spa
while the club remained open for business.
Charter removed existing plumbing and reinstalled it under a new
slab-on-grade, installed 9,000 SF of tile, added new granite vanities
and rebuilt the hot tubs, steam rooms and saunas. Crews adjusted
schedules and added manpower when extensive rot to the interior walls
nearly doubled the size of the project.
The jobsite’s location two floors underground made it impossible
to use traditional demolition and concrete pumping methods. Crews
manually removed the existing slab-on-grade and mixed and poured
concrete for the new slab by hand.
Safety was a key issue. The site is located near Pike Place Market – one
of Seattle’s most popular tourist destinations. Materials and
equipment had to pass across busy sidewalks, often packed with people.
Charter carefully scheduled deliveries and timed ingress and egress
to ensure the safety of the public and club guests.
