Charter Construction was hired to decommission the existing indoor pool and locker room areas, and remodel the space to include offices, drama design studios and a lighting lab.  All mechanical and plumbing systems were replaced as well as the existing flat and pitched roofs.

Built in 1923 with the addition of the pool a year later, much of the finishes and structure were original.  The University wished to leave as much of the original finishes in place and repair only what was necessary.

The building remained occupied throughout construction.  Due to the age, asbestos was used in the original construction; crews were careful that proper abatement procedures were carried out and provided notice of scheduled work. With a 25’ foot ceiling height in the pool area and the majority of the HVAC work to be done above the acoustical ceiling, additional measures were taken to make certain that crews, students and faculty remained safe.

When conflicts in the process occurred, Charter worked collaboratively with both the University and Design Teams to arrive at the best solution that was both cost effective and schedule oriented.
