Floods, Fires, Storms, Oh My! Yes, these things happen, and it’s usually unexpected. Charter Construction has helped people with these more frustrating projects, both small and large, for a long time. Navigating the waters of these sorts of damages can be a headache, especially when insurance companies are involved. Though the destruction is different every time, the approach is the same. Before we show up, here are some critical steps for you, the owner, to take immediately after a flood.
1. Water Shut Off Valve If your flood is due to an internal water source, whether it is a commercial space, apartment, condo, or house, immediately find the water shut-off valve and turn it clockwise. This will turn off the water to your building.
2. Call management or emergency service company If you live in a condo, contact your management company. If it’s a commercial space or single-family residence, you can go directly to an emergency service company like Charter Construction. Reputable companies always work directly with your insurance company, so don’t waste time getting somebody out to investigate.
3. Move Household or other Items Numbers 2 and 3 are interchangeable, but next is to move all contents away from the water: furniture, clothes, kids, pets, etc. Depending on the age of the kids, good luck on that one ;)
4. CallInsurance Company Perform all of the above quickly because you’ll want to call your insurance company and make a claim as fast as possible.
5. Then we take over After you’ve made your claim, that’s where Charter takes over. We deal with the insurance company, so you don’t have to, and work hand-in-hand with them to realize the scope of work.
One final tip... Any competent general contractor will document all damages to your property by taking photographs - and more photos are always better than less.
